Dear RIO Members,
We hope that you are all keeping healthy. Given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, we have taken the decision to host RIO 2021 as an online event as it is looking unlikely that travel and social distancing restrictions will be completely back to normal by spring 2021, despite the recent vaccine news.
We have decided to run RIO 2021 as a series of online seminars, rather than the usual two day conference. Our rationale for this is that time zone differences would make the usual two day event challenging to coordinate and would exclude some RIO members from participating, whilst video call fatigue could be an issue for delegates over a two day event. Instead, we propose to run a series of weekly RIO seminars on a Friday afternoon (European time) from the end of February and throughout March. The exact number of seminars will depend on the number of presenter requests that we receive. We hope that the weekly slot on a Friday will give RIO members something research-related to look forward to at the end of each week, whilst also allowing international members to join us early in the morning or late in the evening, depending on their time zone. We will advertise the schedule in advance of each week, and RIO members can join as many or as few of the seminars as they are able to attend. We hope that you can see value in this format given the current circumstances.
Presenters will be allocated 25 minutes (15 minutes talk, 10 minutes questions).
Best wishes,
Adam, Cornelia, Dan, and Dave
