It is with great sadness that our academic community heard about the loss of Aidan Moran.
Thanks to @KieranShannon7 @ExaminerSport for such a lovely tribute to Aidan and his lasting impact in the field of sport psychology.

Below are two more tributes to acknowledge his significant contribution
Aidan Moran and RIO PhDs
Dr Helen O’Shea, one of Aidan’s recent PhD graduates, receiving “Best PhD Thesis for 2018 in the College of Social Sciences and Law at UCD”. Helen’s External Examiner was Paul Holmes, continuing the relationship many of us had with Aidan as a wonderfully collaborative colleague. Aidan was also PhD examiner for Dr Louise Ewan (early RIO member) and for Dave Smith and Paul over 20 years ago.
-------
Someone once told me that the length of a person’s CV is inversely proportionate to how much they have achieved. This came to mind many years later when I asked Aidan to be the external examiner for my first PhD student’s thesis. He submitted a one page document which stated the number of books and journals he had written and the number of PhD students he had supervised and examined worldwide. There is no doubt that he was a brilliant academic: thorough, challenging, inspiring and fair.
This is one of three main interactions that I had with Aidan. The first as he acted as my own external examiner. Mid way through my viva the fire alarm went off and he joked that I had planned it on purpose to get out of a difficult question. The second was when we co-authored a paper (along with Paul Holmes and Dave Smith). Despite being the most junior academic on the paper he allowed me to take the lead, even flying in from Dublin for the day to go over the corrections. It was these things that went around the outside of his academic work that stood him apart. Bright, generous with his time, kind, warm and brimming with integrity.
An outstanding scholar and a true gent.

Dear RIO group members
I am trying to find someone interested in a postdoctoral position from Oct 2019. The area of research must be perception and action - imagery and observation, and either involving cognitive neuroscience methods (e.g., fMRI, EEG etc), or neuropsychology methods (patient testing). I have access to lots of equipment, and at least 1/3 of the neurological patients of Belgium.
With the candidate, we will apply for funding (with an average of 1 in 3 success rate). The post is for a minimum of three years, maximum five years (full-time salary). There is also a maximum of 25k euro each year for equipment / programmer costs / publication costs / conference attendance etc.
The candidate must have a PhD before the start date of the project. The candidate must also have two articles in press, and evidence of international conference disseminations (i.e., not in Belgium). Being able to speak French would be a bonus, but it is not essential.
If you are interested, please send an email to [email protected]
https://www.psy-naps.org/
The post will be based Belgium at the Université catholique de Louvain (https://youtu.be/ZTRVyGyLJP8)

ESAN Meeting 2017 (Expertise and Skill Acquisition Network)
ESAN conference is back!
After a year off to regroup…ESAN 2017 will take place on Wednesday 24th afternoon and Thursday 25th May at Coventry University. The keynote speaker will be Prof Geert Savelsbergh.
The Expertise and Skill Acquisition Network (ESAN) organises an annual interdisciplinary conference encompassing both cutting edge experimental and applied research within the Expertise, High Level Performance, and Skill Learning domains. ESAN is a non-for-profit organisation that is in its 8th Year. Our annual meetings are attended by all facets of the Expertise and High Performance Sport community including the scientific community, researchers, academics, policy makers and sports funding strategists, coaches, performance analysts, sports scientists, sports directors, and both past and current athletes. The unique coming together of these delegates’ results in innovative discussions surrounding the bottleneck issues and recent research advances and voids that need to be addressed and updated. We believe there is great benefit to be had in the academic community informing the applied community and, in turn the applied community shaping the research questions of the academic community.
Registration and costs to attend.
Sadly, we have not been able to make the event free to attend this year, however we have tried our best to keep the cost to a minimum. To attend Wednesday afternoon and Thursday will be £60. To attend the full day on Thursday is £40. Places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. However, priority will be given to those who submit an abstract. More information on payment and registration will follow soon.
Submitting a symposium:
We particularly encourage people to submit a symposium around themes that will be of interest to both academics and applied practitioners. The symposia would last one and a half hours, should have three presenters (approx. 20 mins each) of which and the remaining time devoted to discussion. Proposals must be no more than 500 words, contain the authors names, their affiliations and contact details, the title of the symposium and presentations and the abstract. The deadline for symposium proposals is 24th April and must be sent to [email protected]. Please insert ESAN symposium into the subject line of the email so it doesn't get lost in my inbox.
Submitting a conference presentation and poster proposal:
We invite you to submit abstracts for conference presentations and posters. Abstract should be no more than 250 words, contain the authors title and names, their affiliations and contact details, the title of the presentation, the abstract and your preference for a poster or oral presentation. If you would like to be considered for the student prizes, then please indicate this in your abstract submission. The deadline for conference communication proposals is 24th April and must be sent to [email protected]. Please insert ESAN conference communication into the subject line of the email so it doesn't get lost in my inbox.
I hope you can all make it. Please feel free to share this email to likeminded friends and colleagues.
Warm regards,
Nick.

Funded PhD position in motor development at Radboud University Nijmegen (beginning September 1, 2017)
Description of PhD project
In the first years of life, infants and young toddlers acquire basic motor skills such as rolling over, reaching and grasping, sitting up, crawling, and walking. They attain these motor milestones in an impressively short amount of time. There are, however, considerable individual differences in the age of onset and mastering of these skills. The PhD candidate will be embedded in a larger project which aims to explain these individual differences and differences in individual developmental trajectories. As part of this larger project, the PhD student will conduct a series of experiments focusing on the relation between motor development and a variety of factors, for example, multisensory integration, adaptation, transfer and retention of novel skills, and on the neurocognitive underpinnings of motor skills.
The experimental work will be conducted at the Baby Research Center (BRC) in Nijmegen. The PhD candidate will be embedded in the BabyBRAIN group (http://www.dcc.ru.nl/babybrain/) and the Sensorimotor lab (http://www.sensorimotorlab.com/), which are both part of the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior. Research visits to collaborators at Uppsala University (Sweden) are planned.
For informal enquiries about the project, feel free to contact Janny Stapel ([email protected] or [email protected]).

JMLD Special Section: Call for expressions of interest (observation, imagery and skill acquisition)
Hello All,
In my role as Associate Editor for the Journal of Motor Learning and Development (JMLD), I am soliciting papers for a special section (which may grow to a special issue) on action observation/observational learning or interactions between imagery and observation with a focus on skill acquisition. I am curious if there is any new data soon to come out of your laboratory and whether you would consider JMLD as an outlet. JMLD is a new journal and is not as yet indexed, but the Editor (Daniela Corbetta), myself, and our editorial board are trying to increase the output of the journal such that it will become a recognized journal. We are counting on strong role models, such as yourselves, to assist us in the process. To learn more about the journal, please visit the following link:http://journals.humankinetics.com/subscriberenew-jmld/subscriberenew-jmld/journal-of-motor-learning-and-development-online-subscription
Please let me know if you are interested in a submission of a manuscript under this theme by September 22, 2016. You can contact me about your interest through [email protected] with JMLD special section as the subject line.
Thanks in advance for your time and considerations towards this proposition.

Sincerely,
Diane Ste-Marie

NASPSPA 2016 Pre-conference event: Sport Expertise
Dear friends and colleagues
In conjunction with NASPSPA (North American Society of Sport Psychology & Physical Activity) which is being held in Montreal, Canada, in June 2016; Joe Baker and I will be hosting a special Sport Expertise, Pre-conference event:
NASPSPA Pre-Conference Workshop (Wed June 15th 2016; 9:30am –3:30pm).
"Seeing the forest and the trees: Theoretical and practical issues in sport expertise"
To be held at the auditorium of The Olympic Stadium, Montreal, in partnership with the INS (Institut National du Sport du Québec).
**Guest keynote presentation -- Professor Jocelyn Faubert (Essilor - NSERC Chair, Université de Montréal); who will be presenting his much publicized work on perceptual-cognitive skills training in sport (http://vision.opto.umontreal.ca/english/index_en.html).
Please join us for this exciting event which will bring together researchers and practitioners from around the globe exploring sport expertise and applied skill acquisition. Interested researchers (and graduate students!) are encouraged to contact Dr. Joe Baker ([email protected]) or Dr. Nikki Hodges ([email protected]) for additional details. If you are interested in presenting; we anticipate 2 sessions broadly divided on "Expert Performance", with a focus on perceptual-cognitive skills in sport and "Expertise Development" (~15 min, each session with allocated discussion time). Presentations can be idea-based or data-based and we encourage student presentations as well as those from more seasoned researchers (debate is welcomed!). We also welcome discussion on sports-application. Abstracts (max 250 words) to be sent directly to Joe or Nikki (by Feb 15th 2016). The details of the talk can complement but should not replicate presentations for the main NASPSPA conference. Registration will be $25. Please note: the main conference abstract submission deadline is Jan 15th 2016. Directions to the Olympic Stadium from the conference hotel will beposted on the NASPSPA website.
Please circulate and stay tuned to the NASPSPA website for additional details. We hope you will be able to join us in Montreal, Canada!
Tous nos meilleurs voeux pour la saison des fêtes et la nouvelle année!
<All our best wishes for the festive season and new year!>
